Q: Does WDC develop
housing only for women?
A: Although WDC was founded
by a team of professional women with expertise in architecture and
design, project and property management, community planning and historic
preservation, the housing offered by WDC is open to persons of any
gender, race, or religion. Applicants, however, must meet certain
criteria depending on the type of housing, whether it is for low-income
families, the elderly, or housing for individuals with special needs.

projects financed?
A: Federal, state, and private
financing allows WDC to produce safe and desirable permanent housing
for communities in our cities and towns. To learn more about
specific financing programs, please visit the Project Financing page

Q: How did WDC
begin its career in the affordable housing field?
A: WDC is a pioneer in the development
of affordable housing for low-income families, elderly, and individuals
with special needs. WDC was founded in 1979, arising from a
sharing process of ideas and goals among three women architects.
For over a year, these women, at their own personal expense, identified
several potential areas in need of nonprofit housing services.
They identified and applied for several potential sources of funding.
The first project selected and launched by WDC was in the Elmwood
and Mt. Hope sections of Providence in October of 1979.
